Which Crane Truck Finance Structure Is Right for You?
Five ways to structure your finance, each suited to a different goal and cash flow position.
Chattel Mortgage
You own the crane truck from the day finance settles, while your lender holds a mortgage over it as security until the loan is repaid. It is the most requested structure for GST-registered construction and civil operators, since you can typically claim the GST back on the purchase price straight away and depreciation runs through your own business. Crane trucks over 1 tonne payload are exempt from the ATO car limit, so the full purchase price is generally deductible. A balloon payment can be added to lower your regular repayments if that suits your cash flow better.
Hire Purchase
The lender owns the crane truck for the life of the agreement and you make fixed repayments to use it, with ownership transferring to you once the final payment clears. It suits owner-operators who want the certainty of a fixed repayment structure, and the GST is spread across your payments rather than claimed as one lump sum upfront.
Finance Lease
Your lender retains legal title to the crane truck for the term of the lease while you use it on site, making regular lease payments that are typically fully tax deductible. At the end of the term you can make an offer to buy the crane truck, refinance the residual, or hand it back, giving you flexibility if your contract pipeline changes.
Operating Lease
You pay to use the crane truck for an agreed term, and your lender carries the risk of its residual value, not you. It suits fleet operators who like to keep their crane trucks current, since bundled servicing is often included and you simply hand the truck back and roll into a newer unit when the term ends.
Unsecured Business Loan
Funds are assessed against your business's trading position rather than security over the crane truck itself, so you can move quickly on a private sale or older truck a traditional lender might decline. It typically comes with a shorter term and can settle the same day, once your trading history has been assessed.

Have Questions?
Straight answers to the questions Australian crane truck operators ask most.
What types of crane truck can I finance?
New, used, demonstrator, dealer and private-sale crane trucks across HIAB-style truck-mounted cranes, knuckleboom cranes and hook-lift bodies, on any major chassis. Your specialist matches the finance to the work and the lender to your file.
Can you finance new and used crane trucks with HIAB and knuckleboom cranes?
Yes. New, demo and used crane trucks fitted with HIAB, Palfinger, Fassi, Effer and Cormach knuckleboom and articulated cranes are routinely financed through specialist lenders on our panel.
Can I finance a used, private-sale or auction crane truck?
Yes. Dealer purchases, private sales, auctions and end-of-lease buyouts are all financeable. The crane truck just needs to meet the lender's age and condition requirements.
Do you finance trailers and other equipment as well as crane trucks?
Yes. Crane trucks, attachments, trailers and related equipment are all on the panel, and equipment security can be structured independently of the crane truck finance if that suits the deal better.
Do you finance crane trucks Australia-wide?
Yes. We are an Australian crane truck finance team funding construction, civil and transport operators in every state and territory, from metro sites to regional and remote projects.
What's the difference between a chattel mortgage and a finance lease?
A chattel mortgage gives you immediate ownership of the crane truck while the lender holds it as security, and you can claim GST and depreciation upfront. It is the most common structure for established Australian operators. A finance lease keeps the crane truck on the lender's books with set payments and an optional residual, useful for fleet operators managing repayments against turnover.
Can I claim GST and depreciation on a crane truck?
Crane trucks over one tonne payload are exempt from the ATO car limit, so the full value can generally be depreciated, and a chattel mortgage lets you claim the GST upfront. Consult your accountant to confirm your position.
Can repayments be structured around contract or seasonal work?
Yes. Construction and civil contracts often run in stages rather than a steady monthly rhythm. The lender panel includes options that build repayments around how your contract income actually flows.
Can I refinance an existing crane truck loan?
Yes. Refinance can lower your rate or restructure a balloon, and sale-and-leaseback frees up equity in a crane truck you already own outright to fund the next unit.
Do balloon or residual payments work on crane truck finance?
Yes. A balloon or residual lowers your monthly repayment by deferring part of the value to the end of the term. We structure it to suit your replacement cycle so it does not catch you out.
How long does crane truck finance take to settle?
Pre-approval typically comes back inside a business day. Settlement happens once you have signed contracts and any final lender conditions are met. Specialist lenders read contract and BAS income directly, so they move faster than major banks.
Do I need a deposit?
$0 deposit is available for prime applications, especially established operators with active construction or civil contracts. New ABNs may need a contribution, but $0 deposit on the right deal is common for operators with verifiable income.
Do I need to own property to qualify?
No. Many of our lenders score the deal on contract income and asset value rather than requiring property security. Non-property owners regularly settle crane truck finance through Equifund.
Can I get crane truck finance as an owner-driver with a short trading history?
Yes. Specialist lenders can assess on your head-contract, the asset and your industry experience rather than requiring years of trading, which is how many first-crane-truck operators get pre-approved.
Can I finance multiple crane trucks or a whole fleet?
Yes. Multi-truck and fleet deals are common, funded as a package under a master facility rather than separate loans, which simplifies your repayments and reporting.
What do I need to apply for crane truck finance?
An active ABN, recent BAS or bank statements, the crane truck details, and any construction or civil contract you hold. We will confirm exactly what your lender match needs after a quick call.
