Understanding Your Numbers

Let's Make Sense of Your Numbers

No jargon and no pressure. Pick a topic below and we will explain it in plain English, the way we would over a coffee, so you can make a confident call.

Indicative rate

A friendly guide, not a locked-in number. Your real rate depends on little things like how long you have been trading and the asset itself. Finding you a sharp one is our job, not yours, and you never have to work it out alone.

Balloon or residual

A slice of the loan you set aside for the very end, which keeps your weekly payments lighter today. When you get there you can pay it out, refinance, or trade the asset in, and we walk you through whichever suits you best.

Chattel mortgage

The most common, straightforward way to finance business gear. The asset is yours from day one, and it often comes with handy GST and tax perks your accountant will love. We handle the paperwork.

Bigger deposit or trade-in

A deposit, or trading in something you already own, means a smaller amount to finance and less interest along the way. Even a modest amount makes a difference, and there is no minimum you have to hit.

A longer loan term

Spreading the loan over more years makes each payment smaller and kinder on your cash flow. You pay a little more for the breathing room, and that is a perfectly normal, sensible trade to make.

Adding a balloon

Leaving a lump sum for the end keeps your weekly payments lower now. Plenty of businesses do it to protect cash flow, and we help you plan for that final payment well in advance.

GST on the purchase

If you are registered for GST, you may be able to claim the GST on the asset, depending on how the finance is structured. Your accountant can confirm exactly what applies to you.

Depreciation and tax

Business assets can often be depreciated, and the interest may be deductible. It is worth a quick chat with your accountant to make the most of it at tax time.

No impact to ask

Getting an estimate or asking us a question does not touch your credit score. You are only formally assessed once you choose to go ahead with an application.

FAQ

Common Commercial Finance Questions

Straight answers to the questions businesses ask most.

How are excavator finance repayments calculated?

Repayments are worked out by amortising the amount financed over your chosen term at an indicative interest rate, then adjusting for any balloon or residual left owing at the end. The amount financed is the machine price less any deposit and trade-in. This calculator returns indicative weekly, fortnightly and monthly figures. Actual repayments depend on the lender, rate, fees and finance structure.

Can I finance a used excavator or earthmoving machine?

Yes. Many lenders finance used excavators, loaders, dozers and other earthmoving plant. What matters most is the machine's age and hours on the clock, along with its make and condition. Higher-hour or older machines may need a shorter term or a larger deposit. A specialist can match your machine to a lender comfortable with its age, hours and use.

What deposit do I need for excavator finance?

Many established civil and earthmoving businesses can access finance with little or no deposit for strong credit profiles, subject to lender approval. A deposit or a trade-in reduces the amount financed and lowers your repayments. Newer businesses or older machines may be asked for a deposit. Tell us your situation and we will show you what is realistic across our lender panel.

What is a balloon or residual on an excavator loan?

A balloon or residual is a lump sum left owing at the end of the term. It lowers your regular repayments during the term, but you pay out or refinance that amount at the end. Balloons are common on earthmoving plant to keep repayments manageable between projects and contracts. The calculator lets you test different balloon percentages to see the effect.

What is a chattel mortgage on an excavator?

With a chattel mortgage you own the machine from day one and the lender holds a mortgage over it as security. GST on the purchase price may be claimable up front, and interest and depreciation may be deductible for business use. It is one of the most common structures for civil contractors and plant hire operators. Your accountant can confirm how it applies to your business.

Chattel mortgage or finance lease for earthmoving machinery?

With a chattel mortgage you own the machine and the lender takes security over it. With a finance lease the lender owns the machine and leases it to you, usually with a residual at the end. The tax, GST and ownership outcomes differ between the two. Speak with your accountant about which suits your business, and we can arrange either across our lender panel.

Can I claim GST and depreciation on a financed excavator?

For eligible business use, GST treatment differs between finance structures, and depreciation and interest may be deductible. A chattel mortgage often allows the GST on the purchase to be claimed up front, while a lease usually applies GST to each repayment. This is general information only, not tax advice. Confirm the treatment for your business with your accountant.

Can I get excavator finance for a new civil business or ABN?

Yes. Lenders assess your ABN history, trading income and the machine itself, so owner-operators and newer civil businesses have options, sometimes with a larger deposit or property backing. Every application is assessed individually. Tell us about your situation and a specialist will show you where you stand across our lender panel.

How much can I borrow for an excavator or earthmoving machine?

Borrowing capacity depends on your business income, ABN and credit history, and the machine's type, age, hours and price. There is no fixed limit that applies to every business. An Equifund specialist compares a panel of over 80 commercial lenders to find a competitive fit, then confirms your real numbers before you decide anything.

How fast can I get pre-approved for excavator finance?

For straightforward applications, an indicative pre-approval can often be provided within about 24 hours once we have a few business details. Pre-approval is not a formal approval; your lender confirms the final rate, structure and terms after assessing your application. It does give you a clear budget so you can move quickly at auction or on a private sale.

Does checking my excavator repayment estimate affect my credit score?

No. This calculator is an estimate to help you plan and does not involve a credit check, so using it does not affect your credit score. Enquiring with Equifund about your options also does not affect your score. A credit check only happens later, with your consent, when a lender formally assesses an application.
